Common Types of Colon Surgery

Each year in the United States, over 300,000 surgical procedures are performed on patients with diseases of the colon. These procedures can often stop the progression of the patient’s disease and, in some cases, cure it.

There are many different kinds of colon surgery and your surgeon will explain exactly what type of procedure you may be undergoing. However, there are several common types of procedures that may be performed either open or with minimally-invasive colon surgery. Your specific type of surgery will be determined by the location of the disease being treated.

Right Hemi-Colectomy

Portions of the ascending colon and the transverse colon are removed. The colon is then connected to the end of the small intestine.

Left Hemi Colectomy

Portions of the distal half of the transverse colon, the descending colon, and the sigmoid colon are removed.

Sigmoid Colon Resection

This procedure removes diseased portions of the colon above the rectum and below the descending colon.

Segmental Resection

A portion of a section of the colon is removed.
